national assembly

Islamabad, February 18, 2026 — The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Power Division has approved budgetary proposals for the fiscal year 2026–27, aiming to strengthen Pakistan’s power sector and ensure timely completion of ongoing projects.

The meeting, held at Parliament House, was chaired by Babar Nawaz Khan as Acting Chairman due to the absence of Chairman Muhammad Idrees, who was unable to attend because of road closures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Committee confirmed minutes from its previous meetings on January 29 and 30, 2026, while deferring the review of previous recommendations.

A detailed presentation was given by the Secretary and Additional Secretary of the Power Division on the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2026–27. The briefing included ongoing projects, approved and actual expenditures, projected costs, and expected timelines. Committee members were informed that some projects in Karachi had been completed, though formal approvals are pending, and that low-cost electricity generation equipment is currently unavailable in the city. The Power Division is taking measures to supply electricity to Karachi via the National Grid System.

The Committee thoroughly scrutinized the PSDP proposals for 2026–27 and recommended them for submission to the Finance Division for inclusion in the upcoming Federal Budget. Members emphasized prioritizing these projects and ensuring timely financial releases to facilitate smooth implementation.

Additionally, the Committee deferred discussions on Hazara Electric Supply Company (HAZECO) staffing, Board appointments, and ongoing electrification projects in NA-12 (Kohistan), which will be addressed in upcoming sub-committee meetings chaired by Babar Nawaz Khan.

The approved proposals mark a significant step toward improving Pakistan’s power infrastructure and accelerating development initiatives under the 2026–27 federal budget.
