Nathan Smith to Debut for New Zealand Against England Test

New Zealand have confirmed that seamer Nathan Smith will make his Test debut against England in Christchurch on Thursday, while Will Young, Player of the Series from their recent 3-0 triumph in India, has been dropped.

Skipper Tom Latham refrained from revealing the exact playing XI for the first Test of the ICC World Test Championship series but did announce that Smith had been preferred over Jacob Duffy as the team’s fourth seamer. The 26-year-old pacer has been rewarded for his domestic consistency and promising start to international cricket, having recently featured in two ODIs against Sri Lanka.

Adding to the changes, former captain and world No. 2 Test batter Kane Williamson returns to the lineup after recovering from a groin injury. Williamson’s inclusion pushes Young out of the side despite the latter’s impressive performance in India, where he amassed 244 runs and earned the Player of the Series title.

“He (Young) was outstanding in India and contributed significantly to our success there,” Latham said. “It’s unfortunate for him, but having someone like Kane back strengthens our side immensely. Youngy is a fantastic team player, and this decision reflects the depth and competition within the squad.”

New Zealand, currently fourth in the World Test Championship standings, aim to secure a 3-0 series sweep to bolster their chances of reaching the final at Lord’s next year. However, Latham emphasized that their primary focus remains on delivering their best cricket against England.

“If we get into a position to qualify for the final, that’s a bonus,” Latham said. “Our focus is on executing our plans and playing consistently well over the series.”

Smith’s inclusion adds versatility to the Kiwi bowling attack. A standout in last year’s Plunket Shield season with 33 wickets at 17.18, Smith also offers batting depth with a first-class average of 27.02.

“He (Smith) can swing the ball both ways and hits the wicket hard,” Latham noted. “His all-round skills provide great balance to our side.”

Expected New Zealand XI: Tom Latham (c), Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Will O’Rourke.
