NDMA Issues Advisory on First Monsoon Spell from July 3

July 2, 2023: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory to all federal and provincial departments, urging them to take necessary precautions and ensure preparedness for the first monsoon spell forecasted to begin from July 3, 2023, and continue until July 8, 2023.

According to the advisory as reported Radio Pakistan, several regions including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are expected to experience rain, wind-thundershowers, with a possibility of heavy falls and hailstorms. The NDMA has called for increased vigilance and readiness in these areas.

Moreover, the advisory also highlights the potential risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore. The heavy rainfall expected from Tuesday to Friday could result in flash floods and pose a threat to the affected regions. The authorities have been advised to take necessary measures to mitigate the impact of flooding, especially in urban areas.

In addition, the NDMA has warned of the potential for landslides in vulnerable areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Gilgit Baltistan, Kashmir, and the hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These areas are known to be prone to landslides during heavy rainfall. The local administrations have been instructed to remain vigilant and take preemptive measures to ensure the safety of residents and minimize any potential damages.

Furthermore, the advisory also highlights the risk of flash flooding in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and the adjoining areas of northeast Balochistan. From Thursday to Saturday, heavy rainfall in these regions could lead to flash floods, necessitating the need for immediate action to protect lives and property.

The NDMA has requested all relevant authorities to disseminate this information to the general public and to collaborate closely with emergency response agencies to effectively manage any potential disasters that may arise during this monsoon spell. They have also advised citizens to stay updated on weather forecasts and follow the instructions and guidelines provided by local authorities to ensure their safety.

The NDMA remains committed to its mandate of disaster management and will continue to monitor the situation closely. They have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to mitigate the impact of the monsoon and protect lives and property.

It is crucial for individuals, communities, and authorities to remain vigilant, prepared, and responsive during this monsoon season to effectively deal with any emergencies that may arise.
