NDMA issues GLOF alert amid rising risk in northern Pakistan

Islamabad, June 25, 2025 – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), through its National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), has issued a high-risk Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for the northern regions of Pakistan.

The warning comes in response to a combination of unusually persistent high temperatures, strong monsoon currents, and the presence of a westerly weather system — all contributing to an increased likelihood of sudden GLOF events.

The NDMA has noted that over recent weeks, extended periods of intense heat have accelerated snow and glacier melt in the northern highlands. When combined with heavy monsoon rains and thunderstorms, the resulting hydrometeorological stress has dangerously increased pressure on glacial lakes. These conditions significantly heighten the risk of GLOF incidents in areas known for vulnerability.

According to the alert, valleys such as Reshun, Brep, Booni, Sardar Gol, Thalu 1 and 2, Badswat, Hinarchi, Darkut, and Hundur are particularly at risk. A sudden GLOF in these areas could lead to severe flash flooding, endangering local populations, livestock, farmland, and critical infrastructure including roads, bridges, and communication lines. In many cases, access to these remote valleys may be temporarily cut off if such events occur.

NDMA has strongly advised residents, tourists, and trekkers to avoid traveling near glaciers, glacial lakes, and riverbanks in the affected regions. Locals are urged to remain alert, follow updates from official channels, and be prepared to evacuate if instructed by authorities.

The authority also encourages communities to report unusual signs such as sudden increases in water flow, loud rumbling noises, or visible changes in glacial lakes. Such early warnings can be crucial for disaster response teams.

To improve public awareness and responsiveness, the NDMA continues working closely with provincial and district disaster management bodies. Citizens are encouraged to download and use the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app to receive real-time warnings and GLOF updates.

NDMA stresses that proactive community cooperation is key to minimizing the impacts of potential GLOF events and ensuring the safety of those living in or visiting the mountainous north.
