Karachi, June 27, 2025 – As the monsoon system intensifies over southern Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a critical alert warning of potential urban flooding in Karachi and surrounding areas over the next 48 hours.
The alert highlights the threat posed by a fresh monsoon spell expected to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and wind activity across the province of Sindh, with Karachi specifically at high risk.
According to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of NDMA, the monsoon system is forecast to cause widespread rainfall in several Sindh cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Jamshoro, Sujawal, and Shaheed Benazirabad. Urban flooding is anticipated due to poor drainage systems and excessive runoff, which may lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and infrastructure damage in metropolitan areas like Karachi.
In addition to Karachi, the NDMA has listed other regions likely to be affected by moderate to heavy monsoon rainfall, including Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Nawabshah, Khairpur, Kashmore, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Sanghar, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Badin. These areas may face threats of flash floods, blocked roads, and power outages.
The monsoon alert isn’t limited to Sindh. In Punjab, cities such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Multan are expected to receive intense rainfall that could result in urban flooding and overflow of drainage systems. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and the Potohar region are also forecast to experience heavy downpours, flash flooding, and landslides in hilly regions.
The NDMA has directed provincial and district disaster management authorities to take immediate preventive steps. These include cleaning drains, issuing public advisories, pre-positioning emergency relief teams, and ensuring medical and evacuation readiness. In Karachi, local administrations have been specifically urged to clear stormwater drains and prepare for potential evacuations in low-lying neighborhoods.
Residents in vulnerable areas—especially in Karachi—are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and stay informed through official updates. The NDMA recommends downloading the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app for real-time alerts and guidance.
The monsoon system is expected to persist from June 26 to 28, with Karachi bracing for its full impact.
