NDMA issues thunderstorms advisory for Islamabad, Rawalpindi

Thudershower

Islamabad, June 24, 2025 — The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urgent weather advisory, warning of thunderstorms, isolated rainfall, and windstorms expected to impact Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and multiple districts across Punjab between June 25 and July 1, 2025.

According to an impact-based forecast from the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) under NDMA, the weather system is likely to bring episodes of intense thunderstorms and heavy downpours across various regions. These thunderstorms could pose serious risks to public safety, infrastructure, and mobility.

NDMA cautioned that the adverse weather conditions—including thunderstorms and windstorms—may affect cities such as Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Lahore, Multan, and Rahim Yar Khan, among others. In addition to rain, high winds associated with thunderstorms could uproot weak trees, damage rooftops, power lines, and vehicles, and cause localized blackouts.

Residents are advised to remain indoors during severe weather and avoid parking vehicles under trees or near billboards. The NDMA emphasized that vulnerable areas with old or unstable structures are at higher risk during thunderstorms and windstorms.

The advisory also highlighted the likelihood of flash flooding in Islamabad, Potohar region, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated. NDMA warned that localized downpours in hilly terrain may result in landslides and obstructed road access. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are urged to secure their belongings and livestock, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, isolated thunderstorms are expected in several districts including Swat, Kohat, Bannu, Mansehra, and Abbottabad. Strong winds accompanying these thunderstorms may reduce visibility and disrupt electricity supply.

Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will also be affected, with NDMA forecasting isolated thunderstorms and rainfall from June 26 to 29 in Gilgit and from June 25 to July 1 in AJK, including Muzaffarabad and Neelum Valley.

NDMA is actively monitoring the situation and has advised emergency services to remain on high alert for potential rescue and evacuation missions. Citizens are encouraged to stay updated through the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app for real-time alerts and advisories concerning thunderstorms and related hazards.
