Islamabad, July 27, 2024 – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a stern warning about potential flooding and extreme weather due to monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea.

These currents are expected to penetrate the upper parts of Pakistan from July 27, 2024, and persist until July 31, 2024. In response, the NDMA has instructed all relevant departments to take necessary precautions to mitigate the possible effects.

According to the NDMA, this weather system could result in rainfall that may trigger landslides, mudslides, or falling boulders, which could potentially disrupt roads in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K). The NDMA also warned that local nullahs could experience flash flooding. Hill torrents are likely to activate in the Sulaiman and Kirthar Ranges, as well as in D.G. Khan and Rajanpur.

The NDMA explained that flash floods can strike suddenly, often catching people off guard. Populations at risk are advised to avoid floodwaters and find safe locations away from flood-prone areas. The NDMA emphasized that even six inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, and just one foot of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. Bridges can be particularly hazardous during floods, and the NDMA advises against crossing them if water is flowing rapidly. Residents are also urged to avoid staying in weak structures and to seek shelter in safe places such as schools, government buildings, or any concrete structures during intense rain.

To enhance public safety, the NDMA has launched the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store. This app aims to provide timely alerts, advisories, and guidelines to the public, helping them stay informed and prepared during extreme weather events.

As the monsoon season progresses, the NDMA continues to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure a swift and effective response. The public is urged to stay vigilant, heed official warnings, and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property during this period of heightened flood risk.
