Netflix revives free trial offer ahead of tighter password-sharing rules

Netflix has begun offering free trials to eligible new users in several countries, marking the return of a promotion the streaming giant largely abandoned in 2020 as it prepares to introduce stricter password-sharing measures.

According to user reports on Reddit and X, the streaming service is offering free trial periods ranging from seven to 30 days, although the duration appears to vary depending on the user and region.

Netflix offers free trials to eligible new members

Netflix has updated its support page to confirm the promotion, stating that it is “offering a limited free trial to eligible new members in certain countries.”

The company has not disclosed which markets are included or how long the offer will remain available.

Some users have also reported receiving access to Netflix’s Premium plan, which supports 4K Ultra HD streaming with HDR during the trial period.

Offer comes before password-sharing changes

The return of free trials comes as Netflix prepares to expand its efforts to curb password sharing.

Recent reports suggest the company is testing new requirements that would require people sharing a family subscription to create individual accounts linked to separate email addresses.

The new measures are expected to roll out in the coming days, although Netflix has not officially announced a launch date.

Payment details still required

To activate the free trial, new users must provide a valid payment method.

Unless cancelled before the trial expires, subscriptions will automatically renew at the standard monthly rate.

Some users have suggested that creating a new account with an unused email address may increase the chances of receiving a longer trial period, although Netflix has not confirmed how eligibility is determined.

Offer reportedly unavailable in some markets

Reports indicate the promotion is currently unavailable in the United States and the United Kingdom, though users in other regions have reported successfully activating the offer.

Netflix previously discontinued its widely available 30-day free trial programme in 2020 after a surge in streaming demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company has not announced when the latest free trial promotion will end.
