Monsoon Rainfall

Islamabad, September 13, 2023 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory stating that a new monsoon spell is expected to bring thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from September 15 onwards.

This anticipated spell is expected to continue until September 20, providing much-needed respite from the prevailing hot and humid weather conditions.

The PMD reports that moderate monsoon currents originating from the Bay of Bengal are likely to penetrate the upper regions of Pakistan, commencing in the evening or night of September 15. Additionally, a westerly wave is expected to enter these areas on September 16.

As a result of these meteorological systems, the following regions are expected to experience rain, wind, thunderstorms, and, in some cases, heavy rainfall from September 15 to September 20:

Kashmir, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur, and Gilgit Baltistan, including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar.

Moreover, the following areas are expected to receive rain and thunderstorms during this period, with occasional breaks:

Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kohat, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, and Nowshera.

From September 16 (evening/night) to September 18, the following regions are expected to experience rain and wind, with intermittent gaps:

The PMD has issued warnings regarding the potential impacts of this weather spell. Moderate to heavy rainfall may lead to increased water flows in local nullahs/streams in various regions, including Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Galliyat, Murree, and Rawalpindi/Islamabad, particularly from September 17 to September 19. Landslides may also occur in vulnerable areas during this wet spell.

The PMD anticipates that the prevailing hot and humid conditions will significantly subside during this monsoon spell. Farmers are advised to manage their crop activities accordingly, while tourists and travelers are urged to exercise caution to avoid any untoward incidents during this period.

Additionally, wind thunderstorms may pose a risk to loose structures such as electric poles and solar panels. The general public is advised to seek shelter in safe places during windstorms, lightning, and heavy rains.

All relevant authorities are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures throughout the forecasted period to ensure public safety and minimize potential damage.
