Mount Maunganui, December 18, 2025 — New Zealand pair Tom Latham and Devon Conway made history in the World Test Championship (WTC) with a record-breaking 323-run opening partnership against the West Indies on Thursday.

The duo surpassed the previous record of 317 runs held by India’s Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal, setting a new benchmark for the highest opening stand in WTC history. Skipper Latham scored 137, marking his 15th Test century, while Conway remained unbeaten on 178*, leading the Black Caps to dominate the West Indies bowlers at Bay Oval.

Despite Latham’s dismissal to Kemar Roach late on Day 1, New Zealand finished in control at 334/1*, with Jacob Duffy (9)* joining Conway at the crease.

Historically, the last time a New Zealand opening pair surpassed 300 runs in a Test match was in April 1972, when Glenn Turner and Terry Jarvis posted 387 against the West Indies in Guyana—the highest opening partnership for New Zealand at Test level. Latham and Conway’s partnership ranks equal 12th in Test cricket history, while also being the highest since the inception of the World Test Championship in 2019.
