Auckland – New Zealand defeated South Africa in the third T20I at Auckland to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, continuing their strong comeback after losing the opening game.
Batting first, South Africa struggled against disciplined New Zealand bowling on a surface offering pace and bounce. The Proteas were restricted to 136 runs after losing early wickets during the powerplay, leaving them under pressure throughout the innings. Despite a late effort from lower-order batter Nqobani Mokoena, who contributed a useful 26 runs, the visitors failed to build significant partnerships. New Zealand’s bowling unit shared the wickets effectively, with all six bowling options contributing, maintaining tight lines and lengths to keep the scoring in check.
In response, New Zealand’s opening pair of Devon Conway and Tom Latham provided a solid foundation. After negotiating a testing initial spell from South Africa’s pacers, the duo capitalized on loose deliveries to build momentum. Latham, who was given a lifeline after being dropped on 27, went on to score a well-constructed half-century, anchoring the chase. Conway supported him effectively as the pair guided the team comfortably towards the target.
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner praised the bowlers for executing their plans, highlighting their focus on bowling at the stumps. South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj admitted that early batting collapses cost his side the match but remained optimistic about bouncing back.
With this win, New Zealand have now won two consecutive matches and will look to seal the series in the upcoming fourth T20I in Wellington.
