Next-Gen GWM Tank 500 Spied With Lidar, Upgrades

GWM Tank500

The Great Wall Motor (GWM) Tank 500 is poised for a major upgrade as fresh spy shots confirm exciting new features that hint at a more advanced, tech-savvy future for the rugged SUV.

The most striking update is a roof-mounted lidar sensor, likely from leading supplier Hesai Technology, suggesting that GWM is preparing to take a leap beyond the current Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities.

The test vehicle, captured in a new dark green paint job, retains the bold and muscular stance that defines the Tank 500, but now includes subtle yet meaningful changes.

These include stylish silver multi-spoke wheels, fixed side steps, and traditional door handles. At the rear, the SUV stays true to its adventurous DNA with vertical taillights and a rear-mounted spare tire.

While the front fascia remains camouflaged, minor design tweaks are expected. The integration of lidar technology — possibly Hesai’s ATX compact unit — points toward enhanced safety systems and possibly a Level 3 driver assistance package in the future.

Inside, the 2025 Tank 500 gets a significant revamp. Spy images reveal a new column-mounted gear selector and a modernized dual-spoke steering wheel.

The center console has been simplified with fewer physical buttons, aligning the Tank 500 with the more streamlined cabin seen in the upcoming 2025 Tank 300. These updates promise a more cohesive and premium feel across the Tank lineup.

Powertrain choices remain robust and diverse. The 3.0T V6 mild hybrid continues to deliver 265 kW and 500 Nm, mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Eco-conscious buyers can opt for the Hi4-T plug-in hybrid, blending a 2.0T engine and front-mounted electric motor to produce 300 kW and 750 Nm, offering 110 km of electric range.

The high-performance Hi4-Z version, built on an 800V platform, will generate an astounding 635 kW and 1195 Nm, with a 201 km electric-only range.

Currently priced at 335,000 yuan (around $46,500 USD), the refreshed Tank 500’s price has yet to be announced. However, the inclusion of lidar technology may slightly push it upward.

With 3,350 units sold in China in April, the Tank 500 remains a strong player in the off-road SUV market, now backed by even more cutting-edge features.
