No load-shedding for K-Electric, HESCO in peak plan

ISLAMABAD, April 14, 2026 — Pakistan’s Power Division said on Tuesday that consumers served by Hyderabad Electric Supply Company and K-Electric will not face load management under the government’s recently announced 2.25-hour peak hours relief plan.

The clarification follows the government’s broader decision to suspend electricity supply for around 2.25 hours daily between 5:00 pm and 1:00 am to manage peak demand and limit the use of expensive fuel-based generation.

A spokesperson for the Power Division Pakistan said the exemption for southern distribution companies is due to the availability of relatively low-cost power generation in the region.

“Electricity supply in the southern region is supported by alternative and cost-efficient sources, which reduces reliance on furnace oil-based generation,” the spokesperson said.

Officials noted that furnace oil, one of the most expensive sources of power generation, has a limited role in supplying electricity to HESCO and K-Electric. As a result, the cost pressures driving the peak-hour strategy are less pronounced in these areas.

The Power Division added that sufficient electricity from alternative sources is available in the south, allowing uninterrupted supply during peak hours without significantly impacting overall system costs.

Under the broader “Peak Hours Relief Strategy,” other parts of the country may experience scheduled load management to reduce reliance on costly generation and prevent a sharp increase in electricity tariffs.

Authorities emphasised that the strategy is designed to minimise financial burden on consumers while maintaining system stability during periods of high demand.

The government said the decision to exempt HESCO and K-Electric consumers was aimed at avoiding unnecessary inconvenience where power supply conditions remain favourable.

Officials added that electricity generation nationwide remains stable, but managing peak-hour demand is critical to controlling costs and ensuring affordability for consumers across Pakistan.
