NZ vs PAK: Chapman to Miss Crucial Hamilton ODI

New Zealand has been dealt a setback ahead of the second ODI against Pakistan, as key batter Mark Chapman has been ruled out due to injury.

Chapman, who played a crucial role in New Zealand’s commanding 73-run victory over Pakistan in the series opener in Napier, sustained a hamstring strain while fielding. Subsequent scans confirmed a grade-one tear, forcing him to miss the upcoming match.

The absence of Chapman is a significant blow for the Black Caps, as the left-handed batter had displayed fine form, scoring a match-winning century in the first ODI against Pakistan. In his place, New Zealand has drafted in Tim Seifert, who will join the squad for the crucial contest in Hamilton against Mohammad Rizwan’s side.

Chapman will now return to Auckland for rehabilitation, with New Zealand coach Gary Stead expressing optimism that the 30-year-old could recover in time for the third and final ODI against Pakistan, scheduled to take place in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

“It’s unfortunate for Mark, especially after his outstanding innings in Napier,” Stead remarked. “However, we are relieved that the hamstring issue is relatively minor, and we are hopeful that he will complete his recovery in time to rejoin the squad for the final match of the series against Pakistan.”

The inclusion of Seifert provides the Black Caps with an additional top-order batting option. The 30-year-old was in excellent touch during the recent T20I series against Pakistan, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer with 249 runs across five matches. Stead is confident that Seifert can transition smoothly into the 50-over format.

“With several fresh faces in the squad, having a player of Tim’s experience is invaluable,” Stead stated. “He has been in great form throughout the T20 series against Pakistan, and we believe he will strengthen our batting lineup for this crucial match.”
