Pakistan and New Zealand are set to face off in the second One-Day International (ODI) at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on April 2, 2025.
With New Zealand leading the series 1-0, Pakistan must win to keep their hopes alive and force a decider in Mount Maunganui.
The opening ODI was a thrilling encounter, with momentum shifting throughout the game. Ultimately, New Zealand emerged victorious, taking a crucial lead in the three-match series. Mark Chapman’s explosive 132 powered the hosts to a formidable total of 344, setting up a dominant win as their bowlers delivered a disciplined performance. Daryl Mitchell and debutant Muhammad Abbas also played key roles, with Abbas making an impressive international debut.
New Zealand will be without Will Young for the remainder of the series, as he awaits the birth of his child. Right-handed batter Rhys Mariu has been called up and is expected to make his debut in the second ODI. On the bowling front, Nathan Smith was outstanding, claiming four wickets in the opening match. With the series on the line, Michael Bracewell’s team is likely to stick with their winning combination. However, if New Zealand secures the series in Hamilton, Ben Sears and Adithya Ashok could feature in the final ODI.
Pakistan, meanwhile, needs to make tactical adjustments after opting for only four specialist bowlers in the first ODI. Their lack of a frontline spinner proved costly, and they may turn to Abrar Ahmed or Sufiyan Muqeem to strengthen their bowling attack. Additionally, Pakistan faces a setback in the batting department, with Usman Khan ruled out due to a hamstring injury. Imam-ul-Haq is expected to replace him at the top of the order.
With their backs against the wall, Pakistan must deliver a well-rounded performance in both batting and bowling to level the series. Can New Zealand clinch the series in Hamilton, or will Pakistan rise to the occasion and push for a decisive third ODI? The battle continues in what promises to be another exciting contest.
