Karachi, August 12, 2024 – Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), Pakistan’s premier Exploration and Production (E&P) firm, has proudly announced the initiation of tight gas production from its Nur West Well-1 located in Sindh. This marks a significant milestone for the company and the national energy sector.
In a formal notice released to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday, OGDCL highlighted that it has commenced early commercial production from the Nur West Well-1. The company holds a 100% working interest in the Nur Development & Production Lease (D&PL), situated in Sujawal District, Sindh. This move is expected to enhance Pakistan’s domestic gas supply and contribute to the country’s energy security.
Tight gas, characterized by its extraction from reservoir rocks with very low permeability, requires advanced hydraulic fracturing techniques to produce at viable economic rates. These gas reserves are trapped in dense, impermeable rock formations, making their extraction complex and costly.
OGDCL’s notice detailed that Nur West Well-1 is currently producing 1.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 1050 PSI. The gas is sourced from the Lower formation and has been successfully integrated into the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) network. This integration is anticipated to bolster the national gas supply infrastructure, ensuring a more stable and reliable energy source for Pakistan.
The well was drilled to a depth of 2,975 meters. Initial conventional testing methods did not yield satisfactory results due to the challenging tight formation. However, the application of hydraulic fracturing enabled OGDCL to achieve production viability, underscoring the technical expertise and innovation employed by the company.
In addition to the production announcement, OGDCL revealed that it has developed a comprehensive roadmap for tight gas exploration and development. This strategic plan is currently in execution and reflects the company’s dedication to enhancing energy resources, meeting national energy demands, and supporting sustainable development across Pakistan.
