OGDCL discovers high-grade lithium in Pakistan’s geothermal brine

Laboratory analysis confirms lithium concentration of 291 mg/L at Wahid Bakhsh-1 well, opening new opportunities for Pakistan’s critical minerals sector.

Karachi, October 31, 2026: Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has confirmed Pakistan’s first major discovery of high-grade lithium in geothermal brine at the Wahid Bakhsh-1 well, marking a significant development in the country’s mineral exploration sector.

According to the company, laboratory analysis conducted by the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) recorded lithium concentrations of 291 milligrams per litre (mg/L) in the produced geothermal brine.

OGDCL said the well had successfully tested geothermal water, while further evaluation was underway to determine its commercial viability. The company has also engaged PINSTECH to assess lithium potential in adjacent water formations before preparing a development plan for commercially viable extraction.

The discovery forms part of OGDCL’s broader diversification strategy, which includes geothermal energy and critical minerals.

Meanwhile, the company continues its involvement in the Reko Diq copper-gold project, in which OGDCL holds an indirect 8.33 per cent stake through Pakistan Minerals (Private) Limited. Its approved funding commitment stands at $715 million, including project financing costs. The project operator is reviewing costs, financing, security arrangements and development timelines.

OGDCL is also participating in Abu Dhabi Offshore Block-5 through Pakistan International Oil Limited. Technical studies and appraisal activities are underway, with four wells planned during the second exploration period. First production from the Bu Dana, Al Bateen and Al Manhal fields is expected in 2028.

The lithium discovery could open another investment opportunity for OGDCL while supporting Pakistan’s ambitions to develop its critical mineral resources.
