French football legend Olivier Giroud has officially confirmed his departure from Major League Soccer (MLS) club Los Angeles FC. The 38-year-old striker will play his final game for the club on Sunday in a home fixture against Vancouver.

Following his exit, Giroud is widely expected to rejoin Ligue 1, with Lille emerging as the likely destination on a free transfer.

Giroud, who joined LAFC in May 2024 after leaving AC Milan, made a strong impression during his one-year stint in Los Angeles.

Despite the short duration, he played an instrumental role in the club’s recent successes, including helping them secure a trophy last season and participating in the FIFA Club World Cup. His contribution both on and off the pitch was noted as valuable by the club and its fans.

He expressed his appreciation toward the LAFC supporters, his teammates, and the club’s staff, reflecting positively on the time he and his family spent in Los Angeles.

He viewed his experience with LAFC, particularly the achievements such as lifting silverware and competing in the Club World Cup, as deeply fulfilling.

Giroud made 37 appearances for LAFC and scored five goals during his tenure. He featured in all three of LAFC’s matches at the FIFA Club World Cup, hosted in the United States.

Although the team did not progress beyond the group stage, Giroud’s presence brought international attention and boosted the club’s profile.

LAFC General Manager John Thorrington acknowledged Giroud’s professional attitude and influence, emphasizing the striker’s leadership and winning mindset.

According to Thorrington, Giroud’s humility and commitment left a lasting impact on the team and the broader club environment. He was praised for being a positive representative of the club throughout his stay.

This move marks yet another chapter in Giroud’s illustrious football journey. With a decorated career that includes 57 goals in 137 appearances for France and club stints at Arsenal, Chelsea, and Milan, his potential return to French football is expected to generate significant interest.

Having retired from international duty last year, Giroud now looks ahead to what could be a final domestic challenge in Ligue 1, where he began his career over two decades ago.
