OpenAI Launches GPT-5: Smarter, Faster, and More Human

OpenAI has officially unveiled GPT-5, the latest version of its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, claiming it delivers PhD-level performance in coding, writing, and reasoning.

Dubbed “smarter, faster, and more useful”, GPT-5 marks a major leap forward in AI capabilities, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

“GPT-5 is the first time it really feels like talking to a true expert,” Altman said. He added that while GPT-3 felt like speaking to a high school student and GPT-4 to a college graduate, GPT-5 now feels like engaging with a PhD-level specialist across virtually any topic.

The new model is designed to offer improved reasoning, honesty, and accuracy. OpenAI says GPT-5 can build entire software applications and deliver responses with clearer logic and inference. It also promises to reduce hallucinations—a common flaw in earlier models where the AI generated inaccurate or fabricated information.

GPT-5’s launch comes amid fierce competition in the AI space. Elon Musk recently promoted his own chatbot, Grok, as being “better than PhD level in everything.” Meanwhile, rival firms like Anthropic have also intensified their focus on advanced AI tools for coders and developers.

In line with growing concerns about AI ethics and regulation, experts have warned that the capabilities of GPT-5 may outpace current governance frameworks. Gaia Marcus of the Ada Lovelace Institute stressed the urgent need for regulation, while Getty Images’ Grant Farhall raised concerns about content authenticity and proper credit for creators.

The model is available to all ChatGPT users starting Thursday, including a free tier—a move that could indicate OpenAI’s shift toward broader accessibility.

While some critics argue that GPT-5 is more evolutionary than revolutionary, OpenAI maintains that its latest release represents a significant step toward more human-like AI interactions, with major implications for productivity, creativity, and emotional engagement.
