Lahore, October 11, 2025 – Cricket fever has gripped Lahore once again as Pakistan and South Africa prepare to lock horns in the opening Test of their two-match series at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.
The historic venue in Lahore is buzzing with anticipation as fans eagerly await the return of red-ball cricket after a long break.
This Test marks the beginning of Pakistan’s journey in the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle, while for South Africa, it’s the start of their title defense after lifting the WTC mace earlier this year with a stunning win over Australia. The second and final Test will be held in Rawalpindi.
Pakistan, led by Shan Masood, are hoping to bounce back from a mixed home season that saw them draw 1-1 with the West Indies. The return of key players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan has boosted the squad’s morale. The team’s composition offers a blend of youth and experience, with veterans like Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali complemented by fresh talents such as Faisal Akram and Rohail Nazir. However, Pakistan’s inconsistency remains a concern — they’ve won just six of their last 24 Tests, including only three at home.
South Africa, captained by Aiden Markram in the absence of the injured Temba Bavuma, face their own challenges. Spinner Keshav Maharaj is sidelined, leaving Simon Harmer, Prenelan Subrayen, and Senuran Muthusamy to handle spin duties in subcontinental conditions. Their pace attack, led by Kagiso Rabada, remains formidable.
This is South Africa’s first Test tour to Pakistan since 2021, and they’ll remember their 2-0 defeat from that series. Historically, South Africa have dominated the rivalry, winning 17 of 30 Tests. However, playing in Lahore is never easy — Pakistan have a strong record at Gaddafi Stadium, and home fans will be roaring in full voice.
As Lahore gets ready for another chapter of cricketing drama, all eyes are on how both teams will start their campaigns. Will Pakistan rise to the occasion, or will the Proteas spoil the party under the Lahore lights?
