Pakistan’s cricket team is gearing up for the second Test against England, with Assistant Coach Azhar Mahmood expressing confidence in the squad’s ability to adapt to the conditions and push for a win.
Mahmood, while speaking to the media, reflected on the lessons learned from the first Test and the team’s determination to turn things around.
In the first Test, Pakistan expected more spin from the pitch, but it didn’t behave as anticipated until the final day. Mahmood stated that the team is optimistic about the pitch conditions in the upcoming match, hoping for more favorable turn to benefit their spinners.
Addressing concerns over the absence of key players like Babar Azam, Mahmood clarified that the decision to rest him, along with Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi, was made by the selection committee to ensure their well-being. Babar, being the team’s top player, wasn’t dropped but given time to recover, as the team looks ahead to important upcoming tours.
Mahmood stressed that managing player fitness is crucial, especially with a packed international schedule featuring tours to Australia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
The coach acknowledged that the mental and physical demands on players have been significant in recent months, and resting key players was necessary to keep them fresh for future challenges. He expressed confidence that Babar, Naseem, and Shaheen will return rejuvenated and ready to perform at their best.
Mahmood also commended England for their impressive fitness and resilience, noting that when players are in peak condition, external factors like weather become less influential.
However, he maintained that Pakistan has prepared thoroughly for the second Test and is determined to level the series.
With Pakistan looking to bounce back from the setbacks of the first Test, the upcoming match promises to be a high-stakes contest. Mahmood believes that the team is ready to make the necessary adjustments and deliver a strong performance, keeping their eyes firmly on victory.
