Karachi, March 24, 2026 – Pakistan has marked a significant breakthrough in its energy sector by commencing oil production from a local well, a development that comes at a crucial time amid rising global energy concerns linked to tensions involving Iran.

In a notification to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) confirmed the successful start of production from its Pasakhi-13 development well. The project represents Pakistan’s first successful horizontal oil well in a clastic reservoir (Lower Goru – A Sand), highlighting a major technological achievement for the country’s oil and gas industry.

Located in District Hyderabad, Sindh, the Pasakhi-13 well is currently producing approximately 460 barrels of oil per day (BPD). The well was drilled to a depth of 2,966 meters, including a 546-meter horizontal section. Advanced geo-steering technology was deployed during drilling, allowing engineers to navigate within a narrow 3-meter window to precisely target the most productive zone of the reservoir.

The well has been completed using a short string Electric Submersible Pump (ESP), specifically optimized for horizontal well operations. Despite complex geological conditions, the use of horizontal drilling significantly enhanced reservoir exposure, resulting in nearly three times higher production compared to nearby conventional wells.

Pasakhi-13 is part of the Pasakhi & Pasakhi North Development and Production Lease, where OGDCL holds 100% working interest. The company stated that this milestone underscores its commitment to innovation and adoption of advanced technologies aligned with global standards.

The development is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s indigenous hydrocarbon production and improve energy security at a time when global oil markets remain volatile.
