Pakistan is undergoing a coaching staff change following their exit from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at the group stage. The team’s loss to England in the final group match on Saturday led to their exclusion from the top four positions.
In response to the team’s performance, Morne Morkel, the bowling coach, has officially resigned from his role, as confirmed in a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Morkel, a former South African fast bowler, initially joined the Pakistan team on a six-month contract in June this year. The cricket board is expected to announce his successor in the coming days.
Morkel’s tenure began on a positive note, contributing to Pakistan’s 2-0 Test series victory against Sri Lanka. His coaching played a crucial role in Pakistan’s journey to the final four of the Asia Cup and their ascent to the top spot in the MRF Tyres ODI Rankings.
Despite these achievements, Pakistan’s performance in the Cricket World Cup fell short of expectations, with five defeats in nine games.
The team finished fifth in the group standings, missing out on a coveted spot in the semi-finals. Looking ahead, Pakistan’s men’s team is set to resume competitive action with a Test series in Australia scheduled for December.
