Pakistan Customs thwarts major arms smuggling bid at Torkham, seizes 21,000+ rounds

Torkham

Islamabad, January 13, 2026 – Pakistan Customs officials at the Torkham border crossing successfully foiled a large-scale attempt to smuggle arms and ammunition into the country, recovering more than 21,000 rounds of submachine gun and rifle cartridges along with other weapons.

The illicit consignment was intercepted during routine cargo checks at Customs Station Torkham. Officials became suspicious of an apparently empty vehicle bearing registration number TAH-027, which was subsequently shifted to the NLC Import Terminal for advanced scanning. The scanned images revealed unusual patterns, prompting authorities to carry out a detailed physical inspection. The search resulted in the discovery and seizure of a significant cache of ammunition and arms concealed inside the vehicle.

Customs authorities have termed the incident a well-planned and organized attempt that posed a serious threat to public safety and national security. An FIR has been registered, and legal proceedings have been initiated under the relevant laws to bring those responsible to justice.

Following the seizure, Pakistan Customs has intensified coordination with other law enforcement agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation from all possible angles. Officials said efforts are underway to identify the network involved and trace the origin and intended destination of the seized weapons.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) reiterated its strong resolve to crack down on smuggling and corrupt practices, emphasizing that such operations are crucial to safeguarding national security and protecting state revenue.
