Islamabad, November 25, 2025 – Pakistan has initiated consultations with India and other opposing parties to resolve the ongoing Geographical Indication (GI) tagging dispute over Basmati rice, according to official documents released by the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday.
The dispute revolves around the ownership and registration of Basmati rice as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in international markets, particularly the European Union. Pakistan has been vigorously pursuing its claim to ensure that its Basmati rice, renowned worldwide for quality and aroma, receives official recognition as a distinct product originating from Pakistani regions.
The Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has prepared evidence-based documentation and input to support legal representation and defend Pakistan’s claim effectively. These measures are designed to ensure the integrity of Pakistan’s Basmati rice and protect its economic and cultural significance globally.
As part of the PGI registration process, Pakistan publicized its application and received opposition claims, including objections from India. The ministry has conducted consultations with stakeholders and prepared detailed responses to these oppositions. Discussions with opposing parties, including India, are ongoing to reach a resolution that respects Pakistan’s rights and international trade standards.
Officials emphasized that resolving the GI tagging dispute is crucial for enhancing Pakistan’s Basmati rice exports, securing fair market access, and strengthening the country’s position in global agricultural trade. The government continues to engage diplomatically and legally to ensure that Pakistan’s Basmati rice is officially recognized and its unique heritage is preserved for future generations.
