Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is making remarkable progress in strengthening the country’s international connectivity through the 2Africa Submarine Cable project.

This initiative, facilitated by Transworld Associate (TWA), the official landing partner for Pakistan, is set to enhance the nation’s digital infrastructure significantly.

Spanning an impressive 45,000 kilometers, the 2Africa cable is among the largest submarine cable systems globally, connecting 46 key locations across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Powered by cutting-edge SDM1 technology, the cable boasts a capacity of 180Tbps, ensuring robust and high-speed data transmission. Supported by a consortium of eight global technology leaders, including Meta Vodafone, the cable aims to transform international connectivity.

The 2Africa cable is expected to become operational in Pakistan by Q4 2025, ushering in a new era of seamless global communication. Phase 1 of the project began on December 1, 2024, with the Pre-Lay Shore End (PLSE) installation taking place at Hawksbay, Karachi.

This crucial step marks the cable’s landing in Pakistan. The deep-sea cable laying phase, set to commence on April 1, 2025, will complete the installation process.

This state-of-the-art submarine cable system promises to revolutionize Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure. By significantly enhancing international connectivity, the project will bolster economic growth, facilitate digital innovation, and support the country’s growing internet demands.

With global giants like Meta and Vodafone driving the initiative, the 2Africa project is poised to bridge the digital divide, offering faster and more reliable internet access. As Pakistan gears up to embrace this transformative technology, it cements its position as a critical hub in the global digital landscape.

The successful implementation of the 2Africa Submarine Cable underscores PTA’s commitment to fostering digital advancement, ensuring that Pakistan remains at the forefront of the digital revolution.
