Headline inflation surpasses 10% in September 2026: PBS

Pakistan’s CPI inflation rises 10.3% year-on-year in September, while wholesale inflation accelerates to 13.3%.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s headline inflation rose 10.3% year-on-year in September 2026, easing from 11.1% in August but remaining above 10%, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Thursday.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 1.3% month-on-month in September, compared with a 1.2% rise in August and a 2.1% increase in September 2025.

Urban CPI inflation increased 10.1% year-on-year in September, compared with 10.4% in August and 5.7% a year earlier. On a monthly basis, urban inflation rose 1.3%, against 0.9% in August.

Rural CPI inflation rose 10.5% year-on-year, down from 12.2% in August but higher than 5.9% in September 2025. Rural prices increased 1.2% month-on-month in September, compared with 1.6% in August.

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks prices of essential items, increased 8.4% year-on-year in September, compared with 9.5% in August. It rose 1.0% month-on-month, against 0.9% in the previous month.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation accelerated to 13.3% year-on-year in September from 11.8% in August and 0.6% in September 2025. On a monthly basis, WPI increased 1.9%.

Core inflation also remained elevated. Urban non-food, non-energy inflation rose 8.6% year-on-year, while the rural measure increased 8.1%. Both increased 0.2% month-on-month.

Under the 20% weighted trimmed-mean measure, core inflation reached 9.4% in both urban and rural areas. Urban trimmed-mean inflation rose 0.3% month-on-month, while the rural measure increased 0.4%.

The latest figures show that although headline CPI inflation moderated from August, price pressures remained significant across consumer and wholesale markets. PBS regularly publishes CPI, SPI and WPI data to track price movements across Pakistan.
