In a move that has disappointed many citizens, the government of Pakistan has decided to keep petroleum prices unchanged for the next fortnight, starting April 16, 2025. The decision was officially announced late Tuesday night through a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance.
According to the statement, the price of petrol will remain fixed at Rs254.63 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) will continue to be sold at Rs258.64 per litre. This marks yet another review period where petroleum prices have remained static, despite a noticeable drop in global crude oil rates.
The decision was made following a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the meeting, the cabinet approved an amendment to the Petroleum Products (Petroleum Levy) Ordinance, 1961, based on recommendations submitted by the Petroleum Division.
Prime Minister Shehbaz addressed the issue, stating that although international petroleum prices have fallen, the government has chosen not to pass the benefit on to the public at this stage. Instead, he explained that the financial cushion resulting from the stable petroleum prices would be redirected toward developmental projects, particularly in the province of Balochistan.
One of the key projects highlighted was the upgradation and dualisation of Balochistan’s most vital national highway. The road will be improved to meet motorway standards, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, trade, and infrastructure development in one of Pakistan’s most underserved areas.
While the government frames this as a strategic reinvestment, many in Pakistan have expressed frustration over the continued burden of high petroleum prices amid rising inflation and economic uncertainty. Fuel prices have a significant impact on the overall cost of living, influencing transportation, goods, and essential services throughout Pakistan.
As petroleum prices remain steady for the next two weeks, all eyes will be on the government’s promised development plans and whether they bring visible improvements to the people of Pakistan.
