Islamabad, August 4, 2025 – In a landmark move, Pakistan has granted its first-ever international ferry service license, marking a significant step forward in maritime connectivity and regional integration.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has issued the license to international ferry operator Sea Keepers, authorizing the company to launch ferry operations linking Pakistan with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This strategic decision came after a high-level meeting of the Licensing Committee, which included representatives from the Ministries of Maritime Affairs, Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Interior, as well as officials from the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and port authorities.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, described the move as a historic achievement aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision and Pakistan’s National Maritime Policy. He highlighted that this international ferry service will enhance regional mobility, especially for religious pilgrims, overseas workers, and tourists heading to GCC nations.
“The launch of this ferry service is a game-changer for Pakistan,” said Chaudhry. “It offers a cost-effective and comfortable alternative to air travel and will ease congestion on overland routes.”
The ferry operations will initially begin from Karachi and Gwadar ports, using modern, well-equipped vessels to ensure safety and comfort for travelers. The service aims to serve thousands annually, particularly pilgrims bound for Iran and Iraq.
Future expansions are planned based on bilateral agreements and rising demand. The ferry service forms part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to strengthen its blue economy, enhance maritime trade, and promote sea-based tourism, reaffirming the country’s commitment to sustainable regional transport and infrastructure development.
