Karachi, November 18, 2025 – Pakistan has officially launched its first standardized bunkering operations at the Karachi Port (KPT), a landmark move set to significantly boost the nation’s standing in the regional shipping market.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, announced the historic initiative, confirming that KPT is now aligned with global maritime safety and operational standards.
A New Era for Maritime Logistics in Pakistan
Bunkering—the crucial process of refueling ships with marine fuels like oil and gas for propulsion and onboard use—is now regulated at Karachi Port. This standardized service guarantees safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant refueling, which is essential for smooth global shipping operations.
Minister Junaid Chaudhry highlighted that the project was launched under the directives of the Prime Minister to accelerate the modernization of port services and upgrade Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure.
Key Benefit: “The move brings the Pakistan’s largest port in line with global maritime safety and operational standards, a step long viewed as essential for improving country’s standing in the regional shipping market,” the Federal Minister stated.
Why Standardized Bunkering is a Game-Changer for Karachi Port
The introduction of regulated marine fuel supply removes a long-standing competitive gap, enabling Karachi Port to compete more effectively with established bunkering hubs in the region.
• Attracting International Shipping: The availability of safe, reliable, and efficiently managed bunkering facilities is expected to draw more international shipping lines to Karachi, particularly operators seeking streamlined port calls and predictable service standards.
• Boosting Foreign Exchange: Increased vessel traffic will lead to higher foreign-exchange earnings through port fees, marine services, and ancillary commercial activities like repairs, supplies, and maritime logistics.
• Job Creation: The projected increase in port operations is also expected to stimulate employment across various segments of the maritime economy.
Commitment to Global Standards and Economic Growth
Minister Junaid Chaudhry emphasized that the new service enhances Pakistan’s visibility in the international maritime market, demonstrating a commitment to modern, environmentally responsible, and globally competitive port management.
Compliance with international standards—covering fuel quality, safety procedures, documentation, and transparency—is crucial for building confidence among shipowners and international trading companies.
The initial phase of operations will be conducted in collaboration with a leading global energy trading house, utilizing internationally certified practices at Karachi Port. This venture is set for expansion as domestic refineries increase the supply of refined fuel meeting global specifications, a development described as a direct benefit to the national exchequer.
KPT’s Vision: A Leading Regional Hub
The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) diligently prepared for this milestone by assessing existing practices, reviewing global procedures, and drafting new documentation.
This achievement reinforces KPT’s ambition to operate as a leading regional hub and signals the government’s firm intention to continue expanding port capabilities in line with international benchmarks.
