National side to compete against top Asian teams in inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia during September-October international window.
Pakistan’s men’s football team is set to achieve a historic milestone after the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) officially confirmed the country’s participation in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, scheduled to take place in Indonesia during the September-October international window.
The tournament will mark the first-ever appearance of Pakistan’s men’s national team in a FIFA-organized competition. The development follows the participation of Pakistan’s women’s football team in the FIFA Series earlier this year, highlighting the growing international exposure of the country’s football programs.
A total of 14 nations will compete in the inaugural edition of the tournament, with Pakistan among eight teams selected for the premier division.
The national side will face strong regional opponents including India, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, and host nation Indonesia. Pakistan is also one of only three invited countries from outside Southeast Asia, underscoring the significance of the opportunity.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup has been designed to provide national teams with meaningful competitive matches during an extended 16-day FIFA international window. The initiative aims to strengthen football relations across the region while offering emerging nations valuable high-level international experience.
The competition will be divided into two tiers. The top-tier FIFA ASEAN Cup will be hosted in Indonesia, while the second-tier FIFA ASEAN Challenge Cup will take place in Hong Kong, China. Teams competing in the Challenge Cup include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste.
Participating teams will be grouped according to the FIFA Men’s World Ranking. Each tournament will feature two groups playing a single round-robin format. Group winners will advance directly to the final, while the runners-up will compete for third place.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani described the invitation as a major achievement for Pakistan football and expressed gratitude to FIFA President Gianni Infantino for facilitating the opportunity. He noted that participation in the tournament aligns with the federation’s objective of increasing international exposure for national teams.
Gilani emphasized that the FIFA ASEAN Cup offers Pakistan a chance to compete against some of Southeast Asia’s strongest football nations and demonstrate its progress on the international stage. He added that the national team is prepared to embrace greater challenges and compete at a higher level.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the tournament was introduced to create more competitive opportunities for national teams, encourage regional rivalries, and contribute to football development across Southeast Asia. The FIFA ASEAN Cup is part of FIFA’s broader strategy to expand international competition opportunities for emerging football nations around the world.
