Pakistan Met Office Predicts Thundershowers in Karachi and Various Parts of Sindh

Islamabad, September 18, 2023 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting thundershowers in Karachi and various parts of Sindh until September 20, 2023.

According to the Met Office, a low-pressure area (LPA) has formed over Southeast Rajasthan, India, and is expected to move southwestward in the next 48 hours. This weather system is likely to result in the following conditions:

Rain and Wind-Thundershowers: Lower Sindh, including areas such as Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Badin, Sajawal, Thatta, Jamshoro, Larkana, Dadu, Karachi, Hyderabad, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mitayari, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Tando Allah Yar are expected to experience rain and wind-thundershowers. Isolated heavy rainfall is also anticipated in some areas of Sukkur, Ghotki, Qambar Shahdadkot, Barkhan, Sibbi, Zhob, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella, and Awaran from the evening/night of September 18th to September 20th.

Rain and Wind-Thunderstorm: In addition to Sindh, regions including Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Islamabad, North and Eastern Punjab (including areas like Pothohar region, Murree, Galliyat, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Sialkot, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal, Bahawalnagar, and Bahawalpur), as well as Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (encompassing Dir, Swat, Chitral, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Kohistan, Mardan, Nowshera, Swabi, Peshawar, and Kohat) are expected to witness rain and wind-thunderstorms from the evening/night of September 18th to September 21st, with occasional breaks.

Possible Impacts:

Flooding: There is a risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall leading to flooding in low-lying areas of Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Umerkot, Tharparkar, and Mirpurkhas from the night of September 18th to September 20th. Farmers are advised to make necessary arrangements to protect their crops.

Travel Precautions: Tourists and travelers are advised to exercise caution during this period to avoid any unforeseen situations.

Infrastructure: Wind-thunderstorms may cause damage to loose structures such as electric poles and solar panels.

Safety: The general public is urged to stay in safe places during windstorms, lightning, and heavy rains.
