Pakistan Petroleum clarifies project in Sirani Block, denies artificial island reports

Pakistan Petroleum Limited

Karachi, November 20, 2025 – Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has addressed recent media reports suggesting the company is reclaiming land from the sea to construct an artificial island. In a statement to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, PPL emphasized that such reports are misleading and do not accurately reflect the technical scope and design of the project.

“The ongoing activities are focused on ensuring safe drilling operations in a challenging marshy environment, not on building a standalone offshore island,” the company clarified. This initiative is technically complex and one of the first in Pakistan to conduct drilling in marshy, tide-affected regions.

The project is located in the southern Sirani Block, near Sujawal district, a previously unexplored area due to operational and accessibility challenges. PPL has already acquired 2D and 3D seismic data using specialized transition-zone equipment to support exploration.

Construction is underway to facilitate drilling operations, including the development of loading and offloading jetties and an access road connecting the offloading jetty to the well site. Given the marshy terrain and tidal conditions, the access road and well pad are being elevated by approximately nine feet to ensure uninterrupted operations.

The well site is around 30 kilometers from the mainland, with a natural 17-kilometer water channel between the jetties used for transporting equipment via barges. Pakistan Petroleum plans to spud the well in March 2026, highlighting its commitment to safe and technically advanced operations in Pakistan’s offshore energy sector.
