Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) on Friday announced a fresh oil and gas discovery from the Lumshiwal Formation at the exploratory well Baragzai X-01 (Slant), located in the partner-operated Nashpa Block in district Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), PPL stated that the Nashpa Block is operated by Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) with a 65% working interest, while PPL holds 30% and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) has a 5% carried interest. The company said the discovery marks another major milestone following its earlier announcement in January 2026.
The well was spudded on December 30, 2024, and successfully drilled to a target depth of 5,170 meters within the Kingriali Formation. Based on wireline log analysis, multiple Cased Hole Drill Stem Tests (CHDSTs) had earlier confirmed oil and gas presence in the Kingriali, Datta, and Samana Suk & Shinawari formations.
Following encouraging hydrocarbon shows, a fourth drill stem test (DST-4) was conducted in the Hangu and Lumshiwal formations. During testing, the Lumshiwal Formation flowed at 225 barrels per day (BPD) of oil and 1.01 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas at a 32/64-inch choke, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 190 psi.
PPL said the new discovery further de-risks exploration for deeper reservoirs in the Nashpa Block and opens up additional upside potential. The development is expected to enhance indigenous hydrocarbon supplies, strengthen Pakistan’s energy security, and add to both the company’s and the country’s reserves base.
