Pakistan Petroleum Discovers Oil and Gas in Punjab

Pakistan Petroleum Limited

Karachi, September 4, 2025 – In a significant development for the country’s energy sector, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a new discovery of oil and gas reserves in the Attock District of Punjab.

The announcement was formally shared with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), confirming successful results from exploration activities in the Dhok Sultan Block.

According to the statement, Pakistan Petroleum, as the operator of the block, holds a 75% Working Interest (WI), while Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL) retains the remaining 25%. The latest discovery has been made at the exploratory well “Dhok Sultan-03,” marking the second hydrocarbon discovery in the same block.

The well was spudded on January 18, 2025, and drilled to a depth of 5,815 meters to test the potential of the Patala and Lockhart formations. Detailed geological and geophysical evaluations revealed promising hydrocarbon-bearing zones. Wireline log interpretations and subsequent testing confirmed the commercial viability of the find.

During flow testing, the well produced 1,469 barrels of oil per day and 2.56 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas at a pressure of 1,147 psig on a 32/64” choke. At a wider choke size of 48/64”, output increased to 2,113 barrels of oil per day and 4.13 MMscfd of gas at 813 psig.

Industry experts believe this discovery reinforces the significant untapped hydrocarbon potential of the Potwar–Kohat sub-basin. By deploying advanced drilling and exploration technologies, Pakistan Petroleum continues to play a crucial role in reducing reliance on imported fuels.

This achievement not only adds new reserves to the national energy basket but also promises to save substantial foreign exchange for Pakistan, contributing to greater energy security and economic stability.
