The government aims to raise canola, sunflower and rapeseed output to 883,732 tonnes by expanding cultivation across 682,140 hectares.
The government has proposed an 8.2% increase in Pakistan’s oilseed production target for the 2026–27 crop year, aiming to strengthen domestic output of canola, sunflower and rapeseed/mustard. The combined production target has been set at 883,732 tonnes, compared with 817,100 tonnes recorded during 2025–26.
According to official documents, the proposed expansion also includes increasing the total area under these crops to 682,140 hectares from 630,854 hectares in the previous year. This represents an additional 51,286 hectares, reflecting the government’s efforts to improve local oilseed cultivation and production.
Rapeseed and mustard are expected to remain the largest contributors to national oilseed production. During 2025–26, their combined output reached 603,404 tonnes, exceeding the target of 541,890 tonnes by 11.4%. Cultivation also performed strongly, covering 490,219 hectares against the original target of 402,810 hectares.
For 2026–27, the government has proposed increasing rapeseed and mustard production to 647,866 tonnes, up 7.4% from the previous year’s actual output. The cultivation area is also expected to rise to 526,505 hectares.
Punjab is projected to maintain its leading position in this category. The province produced 460,530 tonnes during 2025–26, while its new production target has been set at 506,000 tonnes. Sindh and Balochistan also exceeded their respective production targets in the previous crop year.
Meanwhile, the national canola production target has been increased to 140,810 tonnes for 2026–27, compared with 128,026 tonnes achieved previously. The cultivation area is expected to expand by 10.1% to 93,235 hectares. Punjab accounted for nearly 94.7% of national canola production in 2025–26, contributing 121,270 tonnes.
Sunflower production is also expected to record growth, with the government setting a target of 95,056 tonnes, approximately 11% higher than the previous year’s output of 85,670 tonnes. Its cultivation area is planned to increase by 11.6% to 62,400 hectares.
Punjab and Sindh remain the major sunflower-producing regions, with proposed targets of 43,000 tonnes and 39,570 tonnes, respectively.
However, previous production figures highlight challenges in meeting the original targets for canola and sunflower. Their respective outputs remained below the planned levels of 217,251 tonnes and 127,740 tonnes during 2025–26.
Overall, the proposed targets reflect an effort to expand Pakistan’s oilseed production capacity through increased cultivation, with rapeseed and mustard expected to retain the largest share of national output.
