Pakistan Raises Petroleum Prices for Second Half of January 2025

Islamabad, January 15, 2025 – In a move that will impact consumers nationwide, Pakistan has raised the prices of key petroleum products for the second half of January 2025. The revised rates will come into effect starting January 16, 2025.

The government of Pakistan has announced an increase of Rs3.47 per litre for petrol, making the new price higher than before for the next fortnight. This change comes as part of the regular adjustments made to reflect fluctuations in the international oil market.

According to an official notification from the Finance Division, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) will also rise by Rs2.61 per litre, bringing it up from Rs258.34 to Rs260.95. The notification further revealed that the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) played a key role in calculating the new consumer prices, factoring in the global market trends and their influence on local fuel prices.

This price hike has been attributed to the recent changes in global oil prices, which are often subject to volatility. The government of Pakistan has consistently adjusted fuel prices in response to these international fluctuations, aiming to keep the domestic market aligned with global trends. However, such increases often face criticism from the public, as they lead to higher transportation and production costs.

The new fuel prices, effective from January 16, will affect both regular consumers and industries dependent on petroleum products. These changes are expected to further raise concerns about inflation and the rising cost of living in Pakistan, especially in urban areas where transportation costs are a significant part of household expenses.

The price adjustment has prompted widespread discussions on social media and among political circles, with many questioning the sustainability of fuel price hikes in the context of Pakistan’s ongoing economic challenges. As the country grapples with inflation and economic recovery efforts, such increases in essential commodities, including petroleum products, continue to weigh heavily on the public’s mind.

For now, Pakistanis will need to brace for the impact of these price increases, with many hoping that the government will find ways to mitigate the financial strain in the coming months.
