Islamabad, March 12, 2026 – The Government of Pakistan has reduced vehicle speed limits on motorways and national highways as part of new austerity and fuel conservation measures, following directives issued by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

According to an official statement released on Thursday, the move aims to promote efficient energy use and reduce fuel consumption amid the government’s broader efforts to implement austerity policies.

Revised Speed Limits on Motorways

Under the new guidelines, the speed limits on motorways have been lowered as follows:

• Cars and Light Transport Vehicles (LTV): reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h

• Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV) and Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTV): reduced from 110 km/h to 90 km/h

New Limits for National Highways

The government has also introduced revised speed limits on national highways:

• Cars and Light Transport Vehicles (LTV): reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h

• Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV) and Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTV): reduced from 80 km/h to 65 km/h

Officials said the new limits are intended to cut fuel consumption and encourage responsible driving practices across the country.

Awareness Campaign Launched

To ensure smooth implementation of the new rules, the National Highways and Motorway Police has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to inform motorists and transport operators about the revised speed limits.

Authorities said the campaign will help commuters understand the updated regulations and ensure compliance on motorways and national highways across Pakistan.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader energy-saving strategy, aimed at managing fuel consumption while promoting safer and more sustainable road travel.
