Pakistan, Saudi Arabia agree to strengthen economic ties

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have agreed to strengthen economic ties, marking a significant step in the long-standing bilateral partnership between the two countries.

The consensus was reached during a joint press conference held by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived in Islamabad and led a delegation-level meeting with Foreign Minister Qureshi. The discussions covered a wide range of issues and underscored the intent to broaden cooperation in investment and technology.

At the press conference, Prince Farhan emphasized the strong bond of brotherhood that exists between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He expressed the hope that the momentum of their robust relationship would continue to grow, especially as both nations have consistently supported each other during challenging times.

The Saudi Foreign Minister described the discussions as “very, very fruitful” and noted that they encompassed a broad spectrum of matters, with a particular focus on economic ties. He indicated that the Saudi government is keen on encouraging businessmen from both countries to explore investment opportunities in the technology sector.

Additionally, Prince Farhan assured Pakistani travelers of facilitation, particularly in areas related to visa restrictions associated with COVID-19 vaccination. He commended Pakistan for its commendable efforts in overcoming the coronavirus.

On the subject of climate change, the Saudi Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s commitment to working alongside Pakistan in achieving Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision for environmental preservation and sustainability.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan expressed appreciation for the contributions of the Pakistani community in the development of Saudi Arabia. He pledged to ease travel restrictions for passengers from Pakistan and ensure that the Pakistani community in Saudi Arabia receives vaccinations.

He also acknowledged the vital role of security in ensuring economic prosperity and expressed a commitment to facilitating peace efforts in regions such as Kashmir, Palestine, and Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi referred to his Saudi counterpart as “my friend and my brother” and indicated that Pakistan was content with the progress being made in their bilateral relationship. The talks focused on improving economic linkages through trade and investments.

Qureshi mentioned that discussions about the structure of the Saudi-Pakistan Supreme Coordination Council had taken place at the senior officials level, and focal persons from both foreign ministries had been appointed to institutionalize the bilateral relations further.

He expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its unwavering support for Pakistan’s stance on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. On Afghanistan, Qureshi affirmed that both countries share common objectives in ensuring peace and stability.

The talks also addressed the relaxation of travel restrictions amid the ongoing COVID-19 situation, and the Saudi side agreed to extend facilitation. Pakistan’s workforce was highlighted as a positive contributor to the implementation of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 for development.

The two nations agreed to strengthen cultural ties and enhance cooperation in the fight against climate change.

The visit and discussions between the two foreign ministers underscore the deep-rooted and multifaceted relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, based on shared values, history, and mutual interests.
