Pakistan spends $1.14 billion on mobile phone imports this year so far

Islamabad, February 20, 2026 – Pakistan has spent $1.14 billion on mobile phone imports during the first seven months (July to January) of fiscal year 2025-26, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. This marks a 31% increase compared to $868 million in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

In local currency, mobile phone imports totaled Rs 321.137 billion, up 33.07% from Rs 241.330 billion in July-January 2024-25. Month-on-month (MoM) imports also grew 12.60%, reaching $179.380 million in January 2026 from $159.304 million in December 2025. On a year-on-year basis, January 2026 imports rose 33.62% compared to $134.243 million in January 2025.

During the full fiscal year 2024-25, Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $1.494 billion, showing a 21.31% decline from $1.898 billion in 2023-24. In rupee terms, the value stood at Rs 417.351 billion, down 22.09% from Rs 535.690 billion in the previous year. Overall telecom imports totaled $2.099 billion, reflecting an 11.30% decrease from $2.366 billion in 2023-24.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s local manufacturing and assembling sector produced 30.21 million mobile handsets in 2025, compared to only 2.37 million imported commercially. In December alone, local plants manufactured or assembled 2.61 million handsets, versus 0.33 million imports. Of the total locally produced devices, 15.64 million were smartphones and 14.57 million were 2G phones.

Data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority indicates that 71% of mobile devices on the Pakistan network are smartphones, while the remaining 29% are 2G devices, highlighting the growing preference for smart technology across the country.
