Karachi, March 19, 2026 – Pakistan has announced a significant new oil and gas discovery in Sindh, offering a potential boost to the country’s energy security at a time when global markets are under pressure due to rising geopolitical tensions.
According to a disclosure submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, Mari Energies Limited has discovered gas and condensate at the exploratory well Shams-1, located in the Mari Development and Production Lease (D&PL) area in District Ghotki, Sindh.
The company stated that drilling at the Shams-1 well began on January 30, 2026, and reached a total depth of 3,075 meters. The well targeted the Lower Goru-B sands, a known hydrocarbon-bearing formation in the region.
During testing, the well produced 47.98 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas along with 64 barrels per day of condensate at a choke size of 64/64 inches. A stabilized wellhead flowing pressure of 2,404 psig was recorded, indicating strong reservoir performance.
Mari Energies Limited, which operates the block with 100% working interest, described the discovery as a positive development for Pakistan’s upstream energy sector.
The announcement comes amid heightened global energy concerns following the Iran war February 2026, which has disrupted supply chains and pushed international oil and gas prices higher.
Energy experts believe this discovery could help reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuels and support domestic energy demand. Further appraisal and development activities are expected to determine the full commercial potential of the newly discovered reserves.
