Government plans to electrify 15,327 villages and strengthen power distribution infrastructure nationwide
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s power distribution companies (DISCOs) are set to expand electricity access during fiscal year 2026-27 by electrifying 15,327 villages and providing 1,689,849 new consumer connections, according to the Power Division’s latest development plan.
The expansion programme is designed to improve access to electricity across the country and advance progress on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 7.1.1, which measures the share of the population with access to electricity.
The initiative focuses on extending electricity supply to underserved communities while strengthening the country’s distribution network to accommodate growing demand.
GEPCO Leads Village Electrification Programme
Among the distribution companies, Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) has been assigned the largest village electrification target, with 8,876 villages scheduled to receive electricity during FY2026-27.
Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) will electrify 2,798 villages, followed by Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) with 1,104 villages and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) with 1,050 villages.
Other targets include 825 villages for Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), 300 for Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), 280 for Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), 50 for Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), 40 for Hazara Electric Supply Company (HAZECO), and four villages for the Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company (TESCO). Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) has not been assigned any village electrification target for the fiscal year.
Nearly 1.69 Million New Consumers to Be Connected
The government also plans to significantly expand the electricity consumer base.
LESCO has been assigned the highest target of adding 453,000 new electricity connections during FY2026-27, followed by GEPCO with 351,638, FESCO with 296,000 and MEPCO with 250,000.
IESCO is expected to add 195,000 new consumers, while PESCO aims to connect 77,489 customers. Additional targets include 22,617 for QESCO, 21,500 for HAZECO, 13,766 for HESCO, 7,253 for SEPCO and 1,586 for TESCO.
Distribution Network to Be Strengthened
To support the planned expansion, the government intends to enhance the country’s electricity distribution infrastructure.
The development plan includes the addition of 799.5 kilometres of 132kV transmission lines and 2,087 MVA of 132kV grid capacity.
It also provides for 1,321.15 MVA of additional 11kV capacity, the construction of 4,134 kilometres of new 11kV transmission lines and 1,742 kilometres of 400-volt distribution lines.
Outlook
The planned investments reflect the government’s strategy to expand electricity access, particularly in rural and underserved areas, while improving the reliability and efficiency of Pakistan’s power distribution system.
Officials expect the programme to support economic development, increase the number of electricity consumers and strengthen the country’s progress towards universal access to electricity under the Sustainable Development Goals.
