Pakistan to Hold Countrywide Protests Against Holy Quran Desecration in Sweden

Islamabad, July 5, 2023 – In response to the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden, the government of Pakistan has announced countrywide protests and a joint parliamentary session. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Tuesday.

To condemn the act and express solidarity with the Muslim community, protest rallies will be held across the country on Friday, July 7, 2023, designated as Yaum-e-Taqaddus-e-Quran (Day of Quranic Sanctity).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appealed to the nation and all political parties to participate in the protests, emphasizing the need to convey a united message against such sacrilegious acts.

Furthermore, a joint session of the parliament will be convened on Thursday to develop a national strategy on the issue and represent the sentiments and feelings of the nation through the parliamentary forum. During this session, a resolution condemning the desecration of the Holy Quran will be adopted.

The Prime Minister, who is also the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, instructed the party to actively participate in Yaum-e-Taqaddus-e-Quran and organize countrywide rallies.

Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the sanctity of the Holy Quran is deeply rooted in the beliefs of Muslims, uniting them in their reverence for this sacred text.

Additionally, the Prime Minister stated that nations and leaders who believe in peace and coexistence should work together to counter the forces of Islamophobia and religious biases. He described those who target religions, sacred personalities, beliefs, and ideologies as enemies of world peace.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called on peaceful forces and advocates of interfaith harmony to play an active role at the international level in order to combat these negative trends.

The government’s decision to hold countrywide protests and convene a joint parliamentary session underscores Pakistan’s commitment to defending the sanctity of the Holy Quran and standing against any form of disrespect towards religious sentiments.
