Pakistan is set to take a major step toward next-generation connectivity as the long-awaited 5G spectrum auction is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 10:00 am in the federal capital.

The auction marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward faster internet, improved digital infrastructure and expanded technological capabilities. Officials believe the move will strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy and enhance the quality of internet services nationwide.

After years of planning and anticipation, the government has now formally entered the auction stage, bringing the country closer to launching 5G technology.

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the government’s focus is on building digital highways and improving connectivity across Pakistan rather than simply generating revenue from the auction.

He emphasized that stronger digital infrastructure will benefit freelancers, startups, students and young professionals by enabling them to compete more effectively in the global digital marketplace.

Tarar stressed that the government views the 5G rollout as a long-term investment aimed at strengthening the country’s digital ecosystem.

Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima described the 5G spectrum as a “hen that lays golden eggs,” explaining that the government wants to secure long-term economic benefits rather than short-term financial gains.

According to her, international consultants have benchmarked the spectrum pricing based on global standards to ensure sustainability and long-term sector growth.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman expressed optimism that the auction will be successful. He said more than 300 MHz of spectrum is expected to be auctioned, which will help improve 4G service quality and support the rollout of 5G technology.

He added that if at least 300 MHz is utilized, around 50% of the available spectrum could be sold, making the auction successful.

Officials expect commercial 5G services to be launched within four to six months after the auction.

To ensure transparency, telecom companies have already tested the auction software through trial runs and hired independent consultants. According to PTA, no telecom operator has raised concerns regarding the auction process.

Telecom operators will also be required to install at least 200 towers annually in gap areas to improve connectivity in rural and underserved regions.

The PTA chairman reassured consumers that the launch of 5G will not result in higher mobile data package prices. Authorities aim to ensure that 5G services remain affordable and accessible for users across the country.

Officials say the upcoming auction will play a key role in accelerating Pakistan’s digital transformation and supporting the growth of its rapidly expanding technology sector.
