Pakistan is moving closer to a major milestone in its automotive history as plans are underway to introduce the first Made-in-Pakistan electric car priced below Rs 1 million.
The upcoming vehicle is expected to offer an impressive driving range of up to 180 kilometers on a single charge, making it a potentially game-changing option for affordable electric mobility in the country.
The announcement was made by the Engineering Development Board (EDB), which revealed that a locally developed electric vehicle is currently in the works and could be unveiled in the coming months.
First Locally Developed Electric Car
According to EDB CEO, Hammad Ali Mansoor, Pakistan’s first fully locally developed electric car is expected to be introduced by July this year.
If launched as planned, the vehicle would represent a major step forward for the country’s domestic automotive manufacturing capabilities.
The production facility for the electric car will be established in Lahore, where the vehicle will be assembled using a large portion of locally manufactured components.
This approach is aimed at reducing production costs while strengthening Pakistan’s local auto parts industry.
Key Highlight: Price Under Rs1 Million
The most striking aspect of the upcoming electric car is its expected price of less than Rs1 million, which could make it one of the most affordable electric cars available in the region.
Officials say the competitive pricing will be achieved by using locally produced spare parts and components, significantly lowering manufacturing costs compared to imported vehicles.
For many consumers in Pakistan, where rising car prices have pushed vehicles beyond the reach of middle-income buyers, a sub-Rs1 million electric car could open the door to affordable car ownership with lower running costs.
Driving Range and Daily Usability
Despite its budget-friendly price, the electric car is expected to deliver a driving range of around 180 kilometers per charge.
This range is considered sufficient for most daily urban commuting needs, particularly in large cities where shorter travel distances are common.
A range of 180 km could allow drivers to use the vehicle for several days of regular commuting before needing to recharge, depending on usage patterns.
Local Manufacturing to Reduce Costs
The project focuses heavily on localization of components, which officials say is key to keeping the vehicle affordable.
Pakistan is also preparing to strengthen its EV supply chain with local battery manufacturing facilities, with the first lithium battery plant expected to start production soon.
Around 74 percent of battery components are planned to be produced locally, further reducing reliance on imports.
A New Chapter for Pakistan’s Auto Industry
Officials believe the introduction of a Made-in-Pakistan electric car could mark the beginning of a new era for the country’s automotive sector.
Several local companies have already shown interest in participating in the project and manufacturing vehicles domestically.
If successful, the launch of a locally produced electric car priced below Rs1 million could reshape the small car segment in Pakistan, making electric mobility more accessible while supporting the growth of the local auto industry.
