New reforms focus on women’s hockey, grassroots growth, international exposure, and data-driven performance systems
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has introduced a comprehensive National Hockey Development Roadmap aimed at reviving hockey standards in Pakistan, improving international competitiveness, expanding grassroots development, and promoting greater inclusion of women athletes.
The initiative represents a long-term reform strategy designed to modernize the structure of the sport across all levels.
A central feature of the plan is the elevation of women’s hockey. For the first time, structured developmental pathways have been formally introduced for female players.
Under the new framework, national competitions at the Under-16 and Under-18 levels will include both male and female categories. In addition, the PHF will organize a dedicated Under-18 Girls National Hockey Championship to identify and nurture emerging talent for future national and international assignments.
To strengthen the grassroots system, the federation is launching a nationwide school-level development campaign. This includes infrastructure upgrades, improved access to qualified coaching, and the phased distribution of more than 1,000 hockey kits to educational institutions.
As part of international exposure efforts, Pakistan’s Under-21 men’s team, Under-18 boys, and Under-18 girls teams will participate in developmental tournaments in Oman in July, featuring 5-a-side formats and youth leagues.
The roadmap also introduces a modern, data-driven performance evaluation system for the senior national team.
This system will begin with upcoming international events and continue through major competitions such as the Hockey World Cup and Asian Games. Player selection, tactical decisions, and match strategies will be guided by performance analytics, coaching feedback, and expert assessments supported by advanced technology.
In addition, a quarterly review mechanism will monitor the performance of management, coaching staff, and administration, ensuring transparency at all levels. The PHF is also in advanced discussions with international experts to appoint a high-performance fitness coach, aimed at aligning Pakistan hockey with global standards and strengthening long-term competitiveness.
