Pakistan Weather Report for August 12, 2024

Islamabad, August 11, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a detailed weather forecast for Monday, August 12, 2024, indicating the possibility of rain in various parts of the country. The forecast predicts predominantly hot and humid conditions across most regions, with isolated rain-windstorms and thundershowers expected in specific areas.

According to the PMD, rain accompanied by windstorms and thundershowers is anticipated at isolated locations in Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern and southern Punjab, northeastern Balochistan, and southeastern Sindh. While these weather events are expected to bring temporary relief from the prevailing heat, they may also pose risks of flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides in certain areas.

Heavy Rainfall and Flood Warnings

The PMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall that could trigger flash floods in local nullahs and streams across various districts, including Sialkot, Narowal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Hafizabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Dir, Swat, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, and Kashmir. The department has urged residents in these regions to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid the risks associated with flash flooding.

Urban flooding is also a concern, particularly in low-lying areas of Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, and Peshawar. The authorities have been advised to prepare for potential waterlogging in these areas, which could disrupt daily activities and pose challenges to the local population.

Landslide Risks in Hilly Areas

The PMD has also highlighted the risk of landslides in the vulnerable hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Landslides may lead to road closures and pose dangers to travelers and residents in these areas during the forecast period. The authorities have been urged to monitor these regions closely and ensure timely evacuation and road clearance if necessary.

Synoptic Situation

The current synoptic situation indicates that monsoon currents originating from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are penetrating the upper parts of the country at lower tropospheric levels. These currents are likely to extend into the central regions by today, accompanied by a westerly wave affecting the upper parts of the country.
