Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey has confirmed that discussions are underway for his return to the Scream franchise, potentially reprising his role as Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 7.
During an appearance on the Today show, the actor revealed his excitement but tempered it with a cautious wait for the final script.
“I’m waiting on the script,” Dempsey shared, addressing speculation about his involvement in the highly anticipated sequel. Known for his portrayal of Detective Kincaid in Scream 3 (2000), Dempsey’s character was a key figure investigating the infamous Ghostface murders. His survival from those events was revisited in Scream (2022), which hinted at a deeper connection with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), now revealed to be his on-screen wife and mother of their three children.
When asked directly about his interest in returning to the Scream series, the 58-year-old actor replied with a touch of humor, “I mean, you know, it’s always good to have a job.” He went on to confirm that “there has been a conversation about it,” though he has yet to receive official details. “I haven’t seen anything yet. So, we’ll see what happens,” he added, leaving fans eagerly speculating on whether he’ll once again face off with the Ghostface killer.
The forthcoming Scream 7 film, slated for release in theaters on February 27, 2026, is set to bring back familiar faces to the screen. Notably, Neve Campbell, who portrayed the original final girl, Sidney Prescott, will rejoin the franchise. The movie’s co-creator Kevin Williamson is also on board, maintaining continuity with the Scream universe that has captivated audiences since its inception in 1996.
In an earlier interview with Entertainment Tonight, Campbell shared that her decision to return was sparked by a promising new concept pitched to her. She expressed excitement about revisiting Sidney Prescott’s character, particularly in light of the departures of Scream VI stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who will not appear in the seventh installment. “We are going to follow Sidney,” Campbell revealed, speaking to the renewed focus on the character who began it all. “They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board.”
Reflecting on the franchise’s longevity, Campbell added, “I love these movies. They’re so much fun to be a part of. I could never have imagined being in a movie that would have lasted this many decades.”
With beloved characters and creative minds returning, Scream 7 promises to thrill longtime fans and newcomers alike, reigniting the horror-mystery legacy that defined a generation.
