Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially appointed two former cricket stars to key coaching roles, reinforcing their commitment to bolstering the national team’s bowling strength.
PCB announced today that Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal will take charge as the fast-bowling and spin-bowling coaches, respectively.
Umar Gul, renowned for his formidable pace, brings a wealth of experience from his 237 matches representing Pakistan, where he claimed an impressive 427 wickets across various formats.
His recent coaching stints, including serving as the bowling coach for Pakistan in the T20I series against Afghanistan and the home series against New Zealand, showcase his dedication to nurturing emerging talent.
Saeed Ajmal, a spin maestro with 447 wickets in 212 international matches, has been appointed as the spin-bowling coach. Ajmal previously served as the spin bowling coach for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
These coaching appointments mark a strategic move by Pakistan as they undergo a transformation post the 2023 World Cup. Mohammad Hafeez has taken on the role of Team Director, Wahab Riaz is now the Chief Selector, and captaincy changes have occurred with Shan Masood named Test captain and Shaheen Afridi appointed T20I captain.
The revamped coaching staff and leadership face an immediate challenge as the Pakistan men’s cricket team embarks on a tour to Australia for a three-match Test series under the 2023-25 World Test Championship umbrella.
The series kicks off on December 14 in Perth, followed by Boxing Day action in Melbourne, and concludes with the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 3, 2023.
The 18-member squad, led by Test captain Shan Masood, includes newcomers Saim Ayub and Khurram Shahzad, along with the return of Faheem Ashraf to the red-ball format after nearly a year.
This blend of experience and fresh talent underscores Pakistan’s commitment to shaping a competitive team for the challenges ahead.
