The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) strongly condemned the use of “abusive language” directed at Pakistan players by foreign spectators after the national team’s 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand in their one-day international (ODI) campaign.
The incident occurred following the third ODI at Mount Maunganui, where Pakistan all-rounder Khushdil Shah was seen interacting with fans in response to offensive verbal abuse.
The PCB issued a statement confirming that some spectators directed inappropriate remarks and anti-Pakistan slogans towards the players on the field. “When anti-Pakistan slogans were shouted, cricketer Khushdil Shah intervened and urged the spectators to stop,” the PCB stated. “However, Afghan spectators escalated the situation by responding with further inappropriate language in Pashto.”
Tensions between Afghan and Pakistani fans have flared up periodically, often reflecting the strained political and security relations between the two neighboring nations. The incident comes at a time when Pakistan is grappling with increased militant activity in its western provinces bordering Afghanistan. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul of harbouring militant groups responsible for cross-border attacks, although Afghan officials have denied these claims, stating that Pakistan’s internal security challenges are its own responsibility.
The PCB confirmed that following the complaint from the Pakistani team, stadium officials took immediate action, ejecting the two disruptive spectators. The board emphasized that such behavior is completely unacceptable and detrimental to the spirit of the game.
The PCB has urged authorities to enhance crowd control and security measures at future international fixtures to prevent similar incidents. “The PCB is committed to ensuring that all players, including those representing Pakistan, are able to play in a safe and respectful environment,” the board added.
As the PCB continues to take a firm stance against abusive behavior, the organization is hopeful that future matches will uphold the values of sportsmanship and respect, both on and off the field.
